Under the supervision of the Program Manager, the Secondary Trainer assists with the training of the dogs entering the secondary phase of the UDS Service Dogs training program. For a period of approximately six months a dog will reside with the Secondary Trainer. Formal training will be given on all the secondary commands. The dog will gain working skills through social outings with the Secondary Trainer, with the commands naturally being incorporated into life experiences. The Secondary Trainer will assist the Program Trainer in all phases of the placement of service dogs with persons with disabilities to include interviewing perspective recipients and evaluation of dogs. The Secondary Trainer will work with the Program Trainer in determining the best techniques and methods of training needed for “team training.”
High School Diploma or GED required.
A minimum of four years experience in the training and/or handling of service dogs. Previous experience assisting with an animal program preferred. Previous experience working with people with disabilities helpful.
Excellent communication skills. Effective organizational skills. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks. Due to meeting schedules and consumer needs, must be able to accommodate travel to remote locations that are not located near public transportation. Valid driver’s license required.
Flexibility in schedule is required to meet Program needs.
